A brave young girl
When Frida was a teenager she was badly hurt in a bus accident and had to rest in bed for a long time. To keep busy, she began to paint โ her parents even fixed a mirror above her bed so she could paint herself. Art helped her feel strong.
Painting her world
Frida filled her pictures with the things she loved: bright Mexican dresses, monkeys, parrots, leaves, and flowers in her hair. Her art was honest and full of feeling, which made it very special.
Proud of who she was
Frida celebrated her Mexican roots in everything she did. She wore traditional clothes and used folk-art colors, helping the whole world fall in love with Mexican culture.
"I paint flowers so they will not die." โ Frida Kahlo
Why we remember her
Frida teaches us to be proud of who we are and to turn hard times into something beautiful. Like the great artist Leonardo da Vinci, she made paintings the whole world treasures.
