A shy boy who grew brave
As a child, Gandhi was so shy he would run home after school. He trained to be a lawyer and, while working in South Africa, saw people being treated unfairly because of their race. He decided to stand up against unfairness โ but peacefully, never with violence.
Truth-force: a new way to fight
Gandhi taught a powerful idea called Satyagraha โ "truth-force." Instead of fighting, people would peacefully refuse to obey unfair rules, and accept the consequences with courage. It was hard and brave, and it worked.
The famous Salt March
In 1930, to protest an unfair British tax on salt, Gandhi walked about 240 miles to the sea to make his own salt. Thousands joined him. The Salt March showed the world that ordinary people, standing together peacefully, could shake a mighty empire. In 1947, India finally became free.
"Be the change that you wish to see in the world." โ Mahatma Gandhi
Why we remember him
Gandhi lived simply, spun his own cloth, and treated everyone as equal. His peaceful way inspired other great leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela. His birthday, 2 October, is celebrated around the world as the International Day of Non-Violence.
