A caring heart

As a girl, Florence loved to help anyone who was sick or hurt, even nursing injured animals. She decided to become a nurse โ€” which surprised her wealthy family, but she knew it was her calling.

Saving soldiers

During a war, Florence went to a crowded, dirty army hospital. She cleaned it up, opened windows for fresh air, and gave the soldiers warm food and care. Many more men got better because of her โ€” and she became famous for her late-night rounds with a lamp.

Smart with numbers

Florence was also clever with math. She used charts to show that cleanliness saved lives, and convinced leaders to build healthier hospitals everywhere.

"How very little can be done under the spirit of fear." โ€” Florence Nightingale

Why we remember her

Every nurse today follows the path Florence began. Like Marie Curie, she used both a caring heart and a clever mind to help the whole world.
