Volcanoes
A volcano is like a mountain with a hole to the hot inside of the Earth. When pressure builds up, melted rock called lava bursts out!
Our home planet is amazing โ and it's full of surprises, all the way down to its hot, melty center! Let's dig deep and discover volcanoes, earthquakes, and what's inside the Earth. โฐ๏ธ
If you could slice the Earth like an apple, you'd see layers! The crust is the thin, rocky top we live on. Below it is the mantle, made of hot, gooey rock. Deeper still is the outer core of melted metal, and right in the middle is the inner core โ a super-hot ball of solid metal as hot as the surface of the Sun! ๐ฅ Don't worry, we're safe way up on the cool crust.
A volcano is like a mountain with a hole to the hot inside of the Earth. When pressure builds up, melted rock called lava bursts out!
Earth's crust is in giant puzzle pieces called plates. When they suddenly slip past each other, the ground shakes!
When two plates push together very slowly over millions of years, the land crumples up into tall mountains.
Rocks come in three types โ some from lava, some from squished sand and shells, and some changed by heat and pressure.
Deep underground, heat and pressure can turn minerals into sparkly crystals and precious gems like diamonds!
